Sam Cohen was born on 26 July 1890 in Eastern Europe/Russia, the exact place of his birth is not known. Mr Cohen was a successful businessman in erstwhile South West Africa and generous benefactor of the (then) Society for Scientific Development, Swakopmund (now Scientific Society Swakopmund). When the valuable “Ferdinand Stich Africana Collection” was handed over to this Society by the Rotary Club for safekeeping, the Sam Cohen Library was named in his honour as main financial contributor for the erection and furnishing of the building. Mr Cohen died on 26 October 1977 in Cape Town before the library was inaugurated on 3 December 1977.
