The launch of the new book (“Vom Webstuhl in die Namib” written by Marita Jendrischewski) will take place on Tuesday, September 18, 2018, 7pm in the Sam Cohen Library.
The missionary Carl Schmitz spendt almost half a century under the scorching sun of Namibia. In 1906 the school dropout and card player changed his life and went as a missionary of the Rhenish Mission to German Southwest Africa. His love, the 10 years younger daughter of a manufacturer follows 10 years later.
Through extensive research in Germany and Namibia, Marita Jendrischewski has succeeded in impressively documenting the unique life of Carl Schmitz.
The reader takes a journey through the challenges of everyday life, living in an unfamiliar climate, the tedious language acquisition, the difficult proselytizing and the encounter with other cultures.
