Heritage Week 2020 events at Swakopmund Museum

On 21 –27 September 2020 the Scientific Society Swakopmund invites the public to celebrate the Heritage Week 2020 at the Swakopmund Museum and COSDEF Arts and Crafts Centre.

This year the theme is “Ombazu Ndjiritutumuna | Building Cultural Resilience – The New Normal” and the program encompasses not only offline but also online events.

The Official Opening will take place on 21 September at 10 o’clock. Dignitaries will officially open the Heritage Week in Swakopmund and elaborate on the importance of heritage.  

The Scientific Society Swakopmund will launch the new exhibition “Beacon of Hope” that compares the current corona virus pandemic and the Spanish influenza pandemic and features motivational “Stories of Hope” from the Swakopmund Community.

At 12 o’clock there will be a “Virtual Classroom Workshop” for teachers presented by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, Erongo region. The workshop is designed for teachers who are using ZOOM to teach online class sessions. It presents a comprehensive guide to creating your virtual classroom and educating through ZOOM.
It is an online event, broadcasted on Facebook.

On 22 September at 10 o’clock the “Mask Making Workshop” will take place at the Swakopmund Museum. It is an exciting practical workshop with the talented tailor Tilla Smit from the “Mustard Seed boutique”. The participants will design and decorate their own masks and buffs. They will create modern and traditional masks as well as masks for children with animal patterns.

On 23 September at 10 o’clock we invite you for a guided tour of the “Beacon of Hope” exhibition. The Assistant Curator of the Swakopmund Museum Nadine Phiri will give you interesting insights on the current corona virus and compare it to the Spanish flu or “Forgotten pandemic” of 1918.

She will introduce the visitors to motivational stories from the Swakopmund community, collected in the course of the “Stories of Hope” project.

On 23 September at 18 o’clock the acting Chief Social Worker of the Erongo region Audrie Gaes will give a presentation “Stigmatisation during COVID-19” in the Swakopmund Museum. This event will also be broadcasted on Facebook.

On 24 September at 10 o’clock the “Sustainable vegetable garden workshop” will take place at COSDEF Arts and Crafts Centre. The participants will learn how to create vegetable beds, prepare and store seeds from your own plants as well as receive many helpful tips for growing vegetables in the desert climate of Swakopmund.

On 25 September at 18 o’clock the “Namibian Movie Night” will be shown on Facebook. The Namibian Film Commission will present two documentaries: “Once we were hunters” at 18 o’clock and “Mbunza of the Kavango” at 19 o’clock. It is an online event broadcasted on the Facebook page of the Scientific Society Swakopmund.

“Once We Were Hunters” (2012, 49mins)
A documentary on the livelihood of the Bushmen, from how they came to settle in Namibia to their way of life and how it’s currently affected by modernisation.

“Mbunza of the Kavango” (2015, 40mins)
A documentary based on the heritage and culture of the Mbunza people. The documentary is related from the perspective of a young Mbunza lad that is worried about the demise of their original heritage.

On 26 September at 10 o’clock we will show the “Why I love my culture” storytelling video. It is an online event broadcasted on Facebook.
